Orchard Farm

Welcome to Orchard Farm

Welcome to the orchardfarmsomme.com website. Orchard Farm is an English run bed and breakfast situated on the edge of the village of Combles that lays in the heart of the Western Front battlefields. We also offer self-catering accommodation within a converted stable block that comprises of two, two bedroom self-contained apartments.

However, 2019 sees a closure of operations at Orchard Farm due to a number of factors, overridingly driven by Brexit uncertainty.

Additionally, individually we are looking at exploring very different opportunities for work and travel having reached the minimum period we intended to function. Our first ambition being a 2-5 year project with OF being now half way through. This does mean not opening in 2019, but through either this website in the enquiry section ( orchardfarm.somme@gmail.com ) or through the Facebook page we will help facilitate your visit to the Somme if you require advice on where to stay alternatively. We both wish to travel or work to fulfil post primary career ambitions, and generate additional guaranteed income to see us comfortably through the transitional period of the U.K. leaving the EU. We thank you for your patience in this matter, but we are very much driven at the moment by European economic and political events and have had to make a difficult decision.

We have thought long and hard about this decision and hopefully O.F will be in a better position to fully facilitate visits to the Somme in 2020 and beyond.

Orchard Farm's location lends itself to visiting many First World War commemorative sites, and WW1 cemeteries if you are tracing ancestors who served during the Great War. Within a convenient radius of Combles are sites such as Newfoundland Park at Beaumont Hamel, Thiepval memorial to the missing, Mametz Wood, the Ulster Tower, Villers Bretonneaux, the Lochnagar crater at La Boiselle, and the site of Manfred von Richthofen's (the Red Baron) fatal crash at Corbie.

Orchard Farm prides itself on being a biker friendly destination for many reasons. First of all our passion for motorcycling and motorcycle sport, our former careers as police motorcyclists, and a covered hard-standing that shelters visiting bikes complete with wash facilities if you require them, and securely locked gates at night.

We can also offer family friendly accommodation within the 'Stable Cottage' with a bedroom equipped with bunk beds and a bedroom with a very comfortable double bed. Above it is 'The Hayloft' another two-bedroom apartment, both rooms with twin beds, with all its own facilities.

We serve continental breakfast to our B&B guests alongside as much coffee or Yorkshire tea as you wish to drink, and on arrival we'll serve an afternoon cup of tea or coffee.

Combles lies behind what was the German third line in 1916, and evidence of German occupation still quietly lies within hedgerows in the village, where various bunkers still remain. It is walking distance to sites such as Leuze Wood, the newly commissioned Dickens memorial, Combles CWGC and Faffemont Farm. We have the distinction of owning a medal group and 'death penny' for a soldier who is buried in Combles.

There are currently three rooms available for B&B. A double ensuite, and two twin rooms, one with an ensuite bathroom and the other with its own private bathroom.

Please follow us on Facebook or visit our Facebook page for news of seasonal offers for both self catering and bed and breakfast.

Dinning Room to Loung

There are currently three rooms available for B&B. A double ensuite, with views across the farm complex, with its bathroom looking towards the back of the German front lines, a twin ensuite that again overlooks the farm complex, and the twin with the private bathroom with views again front and rear. All of them have been either refurbished in 2017 or in 2018. We don't leave tea and coffee in the rooms, but we are more than happy to make filter coffee or Yorkshire tea for you on request as part of your stay!
